Stephen Colbert w/ The Smurfs and Soccer

What? Who is this brilliant man we're talking about? Oh, it's just former Daily Show correspondent and current Colbert Report host, Stephen Colbert. I thought we were talking about RAAAAAAAAIIIIIINNNNNN!!!!!! Anyways, we spent a little while talking about Mr. Colbert and then dive into some Scrap subjects for the very first time. Alex lets us know about football in Japan. Lita informs us of special eyelid surgery in Korea. Kevin mentions the always awesome 'What the Pho' mobile noodle truck in San Francisco. And Dom comes up with a new use for the Space Needle in Seattle.

Intro Music: Baby Muggles - The Colbert Report Theme by Cheap Trick.

Outro Music: Dance from Shaolin Soccer by Lowell Lo.

    On the topic of Scraps::Soccer:
    "Soccer" is also used in Quebec/French Canada, and it actually is NOT used in France, where they prefer the term "football" (normally only "foot") to the less ambiguous "soccer". How's that for language protection.

    Yay France.

    The Smurfs (Les Schtroumpfts) are originally Belgian. They were a spinoff comic of Johan et Pirlouit (Johan and Peewee). The cat was Azrael.

    Keep up the good work guys and gals. Pho is really great, but I prefer the home made pho to restaurants, mostly because they mix in several kinds of broth for general pho. At least, that's what my uncle does at his restaurant. Why do Americans call American football football?

    Anyway, some more suggestions I would like to see eventually is sugar (seeing that alcohol makes Dom sleep), seiyu, school, sick, scary, subway(s), space, and summer.

      After surfing the web for a good half hour, the real question seems to be why do American's use the term 'soccer'? From what I've read, American Football was created from Rugby Football, which came from the original Association Football. So that's why they're all called Football.

      As for my question, I've found out that the term "soccer" was actually coined in Europe as an abbreviation for Association Football around the 1850's, but don't know why the American's decided to name a very different game the same as an existing game and change the existing game's name to something else. But the general consensus online seems to be that that's just the American way, and I can't seem to make a convincing argument against that.

        If you extrapolate American pride, egotism, and ignorance (disclaimer: I'm very, very guilty of all of these), I think you answered your own question. Football started off here and there as the same game. Over there, it stayed largely the same, and kept its name. Over here, football gave birth to rugby football, which became modern American football. Then the 1980's rolled around and American was to host the World Cup, and we realized "Oh s-word, we took totally stole the name of that sport! Quick, come up with something to call it!".

        Exaggerated, sure. Probably not too far off the mark, though. I mean, come on. This is the country that uses a unit system where 1 = 32.2!
