This week the stuff segment takes a look at our top 5 X-Men characters in anticipation of the upcoming Wolverine movie. Also, Dom fancies Asians on TV. Andy plays with comic technicalities. Lita is constantly looking for For loops. And Kevin reveals his thing for Anna Paquin.
Intro/Outro Music: X-Men (Animated) Theme by Shuki Levy
Sweet, I love the theme to the X-Men animated series! Was I lame for really loving Feral? I know, she was X-Force rather than X-Men, and now she's gone to Kitty Heaven.
Regarding silent protagonists, you forgot Gordon Freeman.
Slackers, no one chose Emma Frost? Talk about hot/awesome/complex! And Dom should lose nerd points for forgetting about Jubilee being Asian.
Hmm. Wide-ranging comments this time:
I should dig up my old Asian-American studies final paper; it was all about how the various Asian characters in X-Men represented very specific real-life things (eg Karma, the Vietnamese character with "brainwashing" powers; Psylocke, being internally British while outwardly appearing Chinese, was a representation of Hong Kong).
Forge is Native American (Cheyenne I think), not black. In addition to Bishop, you forgot Storm. Technically, Maggott (when not blue).
Terry Dodson also does current art on Uncanny X-Men; he splits time with Greg Land. And Land's art only looks like porn stars, because he traces/photochops!
I like a lot of Judd Winick's stuff. People complain about how everything he touches gets AIDS, but that's just raising awareness. Terry in Green Lantern, Mia in Green Arrow... It made HIV an issue to deal with in the DCU. Homosexuality too.
One of Nightcrawler's heroes is Errol Flynn, hence the swordplay. Plus he uses his tail for unique triple-wielding!
When you call Wolverine a caveman, is that in reference to the Moon Child origin? I think that's only canon for the Days of Future Past version...
Magneto doesn't fly exactly. His outfit has those round metal studs; he manipulates those with his power and goes along for the ride. It's been depicted as regular flying for so long now that most people probably have forgotten that.
So can I get a confirmation: Jason Diesel starring as Riding Bean? If we can't get him, try Vin Statham.
re: Captain America. Dom, you should read the whole thing. It actually flows from Steve Rogers into Bucky Barnes... You shouldn't skip on Brubaker just because of who's in the cowl.
There are a lot more 'Silent Protagonists' than you guys mentioned. Of course, Crono and Cloud are the most memorable, there are also a few more that I could name from the top of my head.
Ness, from Earthbound(Mother 2) (And if we're going with the Earthbound/Mother series, might as well name Ninten from Mother 1 and Lucas from Mother 3... although there are what I would call 'Guest Silent Protagonists' in Mother 3 as well. Flint, Duster, and even a monkey named Salsa. Lucas, Duster, and Flint do talk if you talk to them when you are controlling someone else, however. Actually, in Earthbound some of the characters do the same, like when you are controlling Jeff.)
Issac and Felix in the Golden Sun series, both of whom also talk as long are you aren't controlling them.
Pretty much any protagonist in any of the Mana games. (Secret of Mana, Children of Mana, etc.)
Every incarnation of Ryu from the Breath of Fire series.
Also, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest... but I'd rather believe that that game doesn't exist.
This website that I am listing right after this sentence also has a good list of some other, although it calls them 'Heroic Mimes' instead: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicMime
True, I'd love to spend some time talking about the Mother series, but I'm not quite sure how long we could go on the topic. Maybe if we really spent some time listing out silent protagonists across media then we could. It's something for us to think about.
Oops, can't believe I forgot to mention Serge from Chrono Cross.
