Serenity (a look at the Whedonverse)

[We're recording at a new place and there's a heavy level of echo. It doesn't hurt the sound too much, but it does sound weird at first. We should have this fixed by next week.] We go with a six-man discussion and take a look at one of the bigger topics on our list: Serenity. We made sure to take this opportunity to examine all of Joss Whedon's works and have a great time doing so. We hope that you find it fun too!

Intro/Outro Music: Main Title from Firefly by Sonny Rhodes and Joss Whedon.

Quick note as I am listening to this: Hulu.com. All of Firefly. For Free... if you are American.

Speaking as an international listener, and knowing you have many other international listeners, this is probably something you should be aware of when expounding upon the virtues of Hulu.

I keep forgetting that it is not available outside the United States. I will take note of it each time we mention Hulu in the future. It indeed sucks. :(

Yeah, I was going to mention this if someone else didn't. When I lived in Japan, I was able to get hulu to work briefly using proxy and VPN services, but now that no longer works either.

The one thing that's missing is the obligatory "Grrr Arggh" at the end. And after the recording I realized I forgot to mention my other favorite Whedenverse moment, which is from Angel season 2 episode 21 "Through the Looking Glass". And that is Numfar (played by Joss Whedon himself) doing "The Dance of Joy".

So I looked up the quote I used as my favorite Joss moment and it was a lot earlier in the series than I had originally thought. It's from Angel season 2 episode 16 called "Ephiphany" and that line was his epiphany in the episode. Here's the full quote. Although the context does help in understanding it, I didn't want to spoil what happens in the episode, so it's just the part where he says the line.

ANGEL: Well, I guess I kinda worked it out. If there is no great glorious end to all this, if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. 'cause that's all there is. What we do, now, today. I fought for so long. For redemption, for a reward, finally just to beat the other guy, but... I never got it.

  4. Zanza says:

Dang! I haven't watched Firefly yet, so I can't listen to the rest of the podcast! I will return to this episode after watching it on Hulu.

  5. David says:

After listening to this episode, Miho(sp?) might just be the coolest person on the podcast--and she hasn't even said anything yet.

  6. Alex says:

Oh, and I think Soung's comment about Buffy fandom being the first big internet fandom might be true... for non science-fiction. Because JMS had a huge online fandom for Babylon 5 back when Buffy was just a movie. He even answered one of my emails about the show!

  7. Xavier says:

man you guys just got me to re-watch firefly AGAIN

  8. Triggerhappy938 says:

Dom, thank you for making the Castlevania joke we were all thinking of. I would have felt bad if no one had punctuated on the opening.

  9. Shay says:

    (spoilery)

About the second death in Serenity, if you saw the film in the cinema, when -that line- was spoken, the entire room was laughing. And then there was this very sharp and abrupt silence of shock.

Whether or not it was to give a sense of peril, it was a very well executed moment of audience manipulation. I respect that. :P

  10. Firefly is one of the TV Series that was created by Joss Whedon. I love Firefly so much but it does not have Season 2.`.~

  11. Joss Whedon is a great director, most of the science fiction series that i love are created by him.~.~
