Sailor Moon

[Editor's Note: I didn't chastise the guests enough this week because they didn't speak well into the mics. Thus, there are some sound issues. Apologies. I will whip them into shape next week.] This week we look at a show that started a whole wave of anime invasion, Sailor Moon. As you might have hoped, it's just guys sitting around talking about a show that was never targeted towards them and the usual nerdy banter that comes with it. It's a bit weird this week. Really weird. Oh, and we also go through our Top 3 Magical Girl anime shows. Yep, weird.

Intro/Outro Music: Moonlight Densetsu (American and Japanese versions)

C'mon! The Sailor Says brings boring, educational value to an otherwise almost entertaining show.

I first saw Sailor Moon when I was 14-15 on Saturday mornings before it switched to weekday mornings. I thought it was weird but oddly entertaining and of course, teenage girls in short skirts. I liked Amii. It started my fetish of blue-haired babes which my favorite is Rei Ayanami. Also Saturn because she was kinda dark.

And that Saban Sailor Moon.... WHY?! DX Much worse than Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (Live Action Mercury is HOT!)

Also have you seen Sailor Moon Abridged on Youtube? it's funny and riffs on the absurdity of the English dub.

Yes, they did do something very similar in Buffy, including the whole girl power thing. In season 5 of Buffy, they introduced Dawn, Buffy's younger sister who it turned out wasn't really her sister at all. And I was confused during the whole Sailor Saturn talk. She was always a young girl except when she turned evil for a while. Anyways, my favorite was Neptune because she actually was hot and a little more age appropriate. And her umm... alternative lifestyle also added to the hotness.

Oh, and I have to comment that the "Japanese" version of the Sailor Moon theme you used is not the original Dali version. It sounds a lot like Hisakawa Aya singing "Moonlight Densetsu" (the Japanese voice for Ami/Sailor Mercury).

And since I wasn't there (I was busy picking someone up at the airport), here are my top 3 magical girl series. Honorable mentions are Akazukin Chacha, Sailor Moon, Jungle de Ikou!, Nurse Angel Ririka, D4 Princess, Magic Knight Rayearth, Magical Girl Pretty Sammy, Ah! My Goddess (Hey, they're magical, sort of), Card Captor Sakura and Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne.

3 - G-On Riders... Just kidding! Papillon Rose... or not. No, it'd have to be New Cutey Honey. It's the only iteration of Cutey Honey that I've actually liked.

    2. Mahou Tsukai Tai! It's debatable whether this can be considered Magical Girl, but it's not girls that can use magic, so I think it counts.

    1. Oku-sama wa Mahou Shoujo: Bewitched Agnes. I'm really only basing this on the manga which is quite beautiful and brilliant, but was only 3 volumes long. How they made 13 episodes out of that I don't know because, really, not a lot happens in the story. It's a rather unique take on the magical girl story, albeit with some misogynistic overtones.

Chibi Moon? Her dub name was Rini, or Reenie.

  5. Triggerhappy938 says:

Dan moe for himself, lol. Everyone's Danny for Danny. XD

  6. Haku says:

I first saw Sailor Moon at about, 13 years old, or so. more around 6th grade on cartoon network, yes, the old american dubs... very horrible.... in comparison to the real version. Thankfully, because of my nerdieness, i knew what was suppose to be happening with all the masked ineuendoes. aka,Sailor Uranus and Neptune, being homosexual, not cusines, like the american version said

  7. SeintMyon says:

Rollerblade girl in Nanoha, Subaru, is 15 years old o3o
    I actually watched all three seasons. Don't judge me ;__;

Also adding Dai Mahou Touge to my list of series I need to watch.

  8. S.K. Ren says:

My first expose to anime was from sailor moon. I think I was 8 or 9, and I watched it weekday mornings before school. Bur ironically I watched it less for the girls and more for the action (I had a very limited exposure to anime and looking back I still enjoy it but for different reasons.)

  9. N.P. Brandt says:

My first brush with anime was watching girls transform into super heroes and ripping evil a new arsehole. Fond childhood memories of the Air Force, New Jersey, and Sailor Moon.

For those still pining for Usagi and friends, please visit Moon Chase blog. http://moon-chase.blogspot.com/. Operation Moonrise is in full effect and Phase 3 is almost complete. Only 15 surveys short of 500! Funimation has shown interest in re-dubbing the ENTIRE Sailor Moon series. If Dragon Ball Z is still kickin', Sailor Moon should have a chance to throw her tiara once more.

Note: I am not affiliated with Moon Chase in any way. I'm just a determined fan hoping his voice, along with others, will be heard.

Speaking of early US Anime shows... anyone remember Teknoman? I used to watch that stuff when I was a kid:

It was Princess Serenity, not Princess Serena...
Sorry, I'm a really Sailor Moon geek- I own the whole series.
I didn't get to watch it on TV because of the whole "Let's air it at 5am!" thing, but I did read the manga and the internet helped out in encouraging fandom.
