This week we get our game on and take a look at our experiences with the survival horror video game genre. Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Typing of the Dead, and other mainstays of the game genre are all examined in this intimate round-table discussion led by our resident gamers: Danny, Ian and Dom. Also stay tuned for the end in which they discuss their Top 3 Villains/Monsters from Survival Horror games.
Intro/Outro Music: Fun Day at Home (The Powerpuff Girls Movie) by James L. Venable
Yay survival horror! Wasn't expecting it.
So i'm guessing you guys aren't following the schedule anymore?
It's been difficult to get people together for some episodes during the holiday, so we've been picking from the list for what topics work best for the people on hand.
First of all - long time listener (since Snikt!), first time poster and love the podcast!
I noticed no comment on Resident Evil Zero but I assume that was related to Danny's comment about Rebecca in RE1 (since she's one of the main characters in Zero along with a convict.)
I did enjoy the remake of RE1 for the gamecube and while Dom wasn't a fan of the fast zombies, I was - the fact that they only became fast if you didn't burn the corpse of a slow zombie. The first time it happend, I walked over a "dead" body only for it to get up and start chasing me down as i ran for the door, it worked for me! Also how they got over the camera in a few scenes was using mirrors, you could hear shuffling and you could see the reflection of a zombie coming down a corridor towards you - another aspect I enjoyed.
Only played the first Silent Hill and the atomosphere aspect of that game has the biggest impact, tense, scary and yet so rewarding you feel compelled to keep playing (though I had to force myself to stop when in the hospital a few times or only play during the day)
Typing of the dead sounds like alot of fun! I didn't think much of Left 4 Dead, something about the fast zombie hordes put me off (nothing in front of you for a while and 2 seconds later five zombies are within jumping distance, just didn't get into it) I prefer Killing Floor for co-op survival horror.
Thanks for a great podcast on one of my fav genres! (Sometimes it's great to be scared by a game that gets you so involved with the storyline - note that I have so far refused to play RE5 XD)
Take care!
P.S. Excuse my rambling, had to stop myself from replying to everything you covered and sounding like visual addendum to the podcast without a top 3
love the cast guys that was awsome. just got to say i think bioshock should be in there i was terrafide in the first 5 min of the game and could not play it. it was horor and u survived with only what u could find i think it counts.
I believe the game Ian was searching for was Alan Wake. Looks pretty good. Hope that helps!
Nah, it was Deadly Premonition.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Parasite Eve, while it wasn't as freaky as Resident Evil, It was a good game and was a survival horror.
My first Survival Horror was officially Dead Space, but the F.E.A.R series is my favorite. Heard about a British one called Dark Fall, but never played. Ian McConville also sounds way too normal. Not sure what I expected, but someone who draws that epically, yo don't expect him to sound that whitebread.
there is one point the guys sorta had wrong it was japanese to begin with and later on became more americanized after RE took off
I just want to note that I was listening to this while driving home early this morning in thick fog. This amused me greatly anytime Silent Hill was mentioned

I give you, Resident Gigalo, i think...
I remember when zombies couldn't climb stairs...
I agree that RE4 was really crappy in the suspence department, but what really got to me in that game were the Regenerators/Iron Maidens. Their noise really creeped me out, they walked slow but are almost neigh unstoppable, and when you downed one of them, they slithered on the ground and frickin' jumped at you!
That when I learned to really love my IR Scope.
Aw...why no talk about Dino Crisis?
Sure the first one kinda sucked(it being like a code veronica rip-off) but the second was kinda badass!
...though that one felt kinda like an action game with dinosaur poaching...
But the first was so totally survival horror!
...
And as for the clock tower comment...
I can only lament the fact that the game did not get a lot of credit simply because you're a little girl who CAN'T FIGHT and had to constantly hide...
That's survival horror right there, too!
But anyways, keep up the Ohsum work guys ,,//. ( ^.-)
Well Dead space had great controls
