Unfortunately, Tron Legacy's main problem was that it missed a lot of these themes that made the original so profound for its time. It copies a lot of the same ideas, but completely misses the point the original was trying to make. I read an interview with the writer for the new movie and he said he didn't want to make the movie about technology. Instead, he wanted the world of Tron to be like Oz or Wonderland. Unfortunately, technology is the central point to the original story. Without it, everything just becomes a bunch of meaningless emo crap that says nothing with characters and situations that have no relevance to anything real. It's just a VR program that's run amok.

Yeah I seriously have to agree with Dom, as much as it pains me to do so. The movie was VERY enjoyable, but at the same time I didn't like it as much as I thought I might.

I also think Sucker Punch will be fine. It's an original property, right? If I recall, the screenplay was written by Zack Snyder and another guy whose name escapes me. And Snyder is directing so that should have a bit of pull. I mean, I wouldn't say he gets a free pass or anything but all 3 of his movies so far have at least been entertaining.

P.S. Just saw you put up a new poll. After looking at the choices, I couldn't help but think "Where's JEN or EAN?!" I suppose Jen's one of the more common rare guest hosts, but she's only been in like 3 episodes still. This is really just my inner completionist taking over though.

Sucker Punch will do fine. It'll hit the teenage male and young adult male audience, who will be able to convince girlfriends/wives due to some Girl Power influence (if WB markets it right). Warner Brothers is generally brilliant with project choices and marketing, so no worries there. They even convinced folks that Watchmen would be the next big thing and did get it to a $55 million opening weekend.

I guess I'll have to wait and see how Sucker Punch will do when that comes out. At least that seems like it'll appeal to a wider audience than Scott Pilgrim.

Probably the point where I most closely agreed with the S-Wordians about the film was Michael Cera. He was just too nice and mild as Scott Pilgrim. Maybe it was just reading a bit of myself onto the character, but it seems like in the book he had a bit more false confidence (the type that people with social hangups/anxieties sometimes have), and was generally more of a jerkstore. I also thought movie-Ramona was a bit too aloof and mysterious, but that was probably at least partially due to the comparative lack of character development. The supporting characters were almost spot on, and Wallace definitely did steal the show.

In general, though, I commented to a couple people before listening to this podcast that the film captured the essence of the comics, and it's nice to hear that other folks thought the same thing.

Just curious that you guys never really mentioned Ramona, either the character or actress. I thought she was pretty interesting in the comics and movie. But I do agree with you guys about Scott's being a bit of a douche.

I suppose I'm the odd man out in that I like the comics for the deeper backstory, which it should like you guys missed in the comics, as did I.

I'm not sure about Scott Pilgrim being a generational event. It is a very good movies/game/comics, but I think people are blowing it out of proportion a bit. It'll come and go and then everyone'll be onto the 'Next Big Thing'. Also, I am in my 20s (24) and am getting all the references. Of course, I've been into gaming since NES days.

Wow. Does this go into the list of ridiculously long movie titles?

What I've read is that the 3DS uses a "Parallax barrier"(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallax_barrier) which is similar in effect to a lenticular lens(think the 3D covers of DVDs that you see in the store these days), and has the "sweet spots" disadvantage which you mentioned.

Regardless, "no glasses required" >> "glasses required" any day of the week.

We spent a lot of time figuring out a doggy daycare. A lot of them seem awful (bunch of dogs in a big warehouse space with some 20-something kid "watching" them. Those ones seemed really really bad. Be very careful in selecting. Don't want to pick up your dog and discover some awful dog bit him cause nobody was paying attention.

I have to drive 20 minutes in rush hour to get Dusty to his daycare, then I take the train from the station nearby. It adds another 30-40 mins to my already 1+ hour commute, but he hasn't had any problems and is always happy to go and come home to nap.

Question for Kevin, What kind of dog daycare do you take Dusty to? I might need to look for one, and could appreciate some advice as to what to look for.

I think the summer of Phantom Menace is what broke my belief in movie hype. I really enjoyed most of the huge summer blockbusters and all the hype that precluded most of them. Yes, even Armageddon, Independence Day and Batman Forever. It wasn't until Phantom Menace that I realized that I was being lied to by the Hollywood machine.
Since then, I've always taken my summer blockbuster with a grain of salt. Not that I've always been let down or disappointed.

On the topic of summer movies, I wasn't aware of them until the late nineties. I'm like seventeen or eighteen now. So my experience with them has been spread between being absolutely dreadful, amnesia inducing stupid, and "meh". I think with the advent of sequels and the ease of special effects, the thrill of the summer movie is just gone. I can't remember the last time I even went to a movie theater. I'm perfectly fine waiting til Avatar and Iron Man 2 are on FX.

I actually enjoyed Chrono Cross. It's not as great as Chrono Trigger but I attribute that mostly to the whole "phasing" into combat like in Final Fantasy.

I was showing a friend how impossible Emerald Weapon was, The fight lasted about 4 turns. Emerald beam, stomp, etc. One hit Cloud, two hit Tifa.
For some bizarre reason I liked Cait Sith at the time and had him in my Party.
Got his limit. Died before finishing rolling.

The "Game Over." Message appears at the top of the screen but the slots finish rolling on a perfect Cait Sith and Auto-Kill Emerald Weapon in one hit. The victory then plays to my Game Over, I leave battle with only Cait Sith alive with a default 1 hp.

So because of slots, I get to say I beat Emerald Weapon, despite being really really bad at FF7 in my childhood.

No such luck on Ruby Weapon as it was intelligently a fight with a forced slot result of Toy Soldier.

Vaguely related. 9 was my favorite.
Didn't get to finish 3/6, my emulator lost my save file right after Terra left. I lost all will to replay it.
Which is sad because I universally hear it's the best.

Change the poll quick, I have to put in a vote for Final Fantasy VII. I'm biased because I am too young to have played V, VI. Still VII was like my entire childhood. Don't ask me how, but my brother and I once had a level 64 Cloud before crossing the Midgar Snake on a chocobo. The game was really easy that time round until we encountered the first form of the final boss, which did 9999 damage per hit because we were lvl 99.

I love the story and characters of VII. The world is so multi-dimensional, it's not what you would call coherent with the weird skiing minigame or Cloud's patchwork memory but it's still beautiful. All those weird long cut scenes that still used the basic graphics were not boring at all!

hm, I know you guys put a lot of effort into the podcast but that tag-cloud is way too small for this epic podcast.

Sure the first one kinda sucked(it being like a code veronica rip-off) but the second was kinda badass!

...though that one felt kinda like an action game with dinosaur poaching...

I agree that RE4 was really crappy in the suspence department, but what really got to me in that game were the Regenerators/Iron Maidens. Their noise really creeped me out, they walked slow but are almost neigh unstoppable, and when you downed one of them, they slithered on the ground and frickin' jumped at you!

That when I learned to really love my IR Scope.

I noticed no comment on Resident Evil Zero but I assume that was related to Danny's comment about Rebecca in RE1 (since she's one of the main characters in Zero along with a convict.)

I did enjoy the remake of RE1 for the gamecube and while Dom wasn't a fan of the fast zombies, I was - the fact that they only became fast if you didn't burn the corpse of a slow zombie. The first time it happend, I walked over a "dead" body only for it to get up and start chasing me down as i ran for the door, it worked for me! Also how they got over the camera in a few scenes was using mirrors, you could hear shuffling and you could see the reflection of a zombie coming down a corridor towards you - another aspect I enjoyed.

Only played the first Silent Hill and the atomosphere aspect of that game has the biggest impact, tense, scary and yet so rewarding you feel compelled to keep playing (though I had to force myself to stop when in the hospital a few times or only play during the day)

Typing of the dead sounds like alot of fun! I didn't think much of Left 4 Dead, something about the fast zombie hordes put me off (nothing in front of you for a while and 2 seconds later five zombies are within jumping distance, just didn't get into it) I prefer Killing Floor for co-op survival horror.

Thanks for a great podcast on one of my fav genres! (Sometimes it's great to be scared by a game that gets you so involved with the storyline - note that I have so far refused to play RE5 XD)

Personally, I love Super Smash Brothers. I don't really care about those really obsessive people. It's probably the most fun when you're with friends and just mess around. Those 'competition' rules are just stupid.

Oh man, Carmen Sandiego. All I remember from that was the cartoon and bits and pieces of the gameshow for those kids. I never watched that gameshow, I was either too young or not smart enough to care too much about it.

It's always nice to hear you guys just kind of deviate and just shoot the breeze. It's hilarious.

Sims were terrible for me! I was sitting alone in my room having no friends, enjoying the building deisign possibilities and the game requires me to make tons of friends! I mean, HELL, I wanted to progress in business, money and design! It turned to real life so quickly, having my sims without any friends. T'was too much of a doll house for me then too.

I totally forgot about that little experiment...

Couldn't get past the controls in any Silent Hill game, only did a small part of 2 before giving up. Didn't find it that scary though, it would have been nice to play it when it was new instead of playing it on a PS3 and being hurt by it's poor graphics.

Eternal Darkness was pretty fun, I really enjoyed the sanity based game play but there was a significant problem with it. Early on I found I just played with no Sanity on purpose to actually get any experience out of it. Later on it was just annoying because it was easy to memorize all of the effects, they were only cool if no one told you about it and the first few times you saw it. Once you knew the effects were there it was lame because instead of blending them in seamlessly they reset the room on you to the monotonous "This can't be happening!" of your controlled character.

A note to everyone, imitating what your sim does when you trap it in a room is likely a bad idea!

That's good to hear, I actually really like the story. It's still one of the prime Marathon Total Conversions out there.

2. Mahou Tsukai Tai! It's debatable whether this can be considered Magical Girl, but it's not girls that can use magic, so I think it counts.

1. Oku-sama wa Mahou Shoujo: Bewitched Agnes. I'm really only basing this on the manga which is quite beautiful and brilliant, but was only 3 volumes long. How they made 13 episodes out of that I don't know because, really, not a lot happens in the story. It's a rather unique take on the magical girl story, albeit with some misogynistic overtones.

I first saw Sailor Moon when I was 14-15 on Saturday mornings before it switched to weekday mornings. I thought it was weird but oddly entertaining and of course, teenage girls in short skirts. I liked Amii. It started my fetish of blue-haired babes which my favorite is Rei Ayanami. Also Saturn because she was kinda dark.

And that Saban Sailor Moon.... WHY?! DX Much worse than Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (Live Action Mercury is HOT!)

Also have you seen Sailor Moon Abridged on Youtube? it's funny and riffs on the absurdity of the English dub.

Also as to Piers Anthony, in the first book of Xanth 'A Spell for Chameleon', the whole pun joke is that by "sowing wild oats, watered by your urine" a wild nymph would be attracted. And at least in the Xanth world, nymphs are basically very naive beautiful girls who indulge in earthly desires. Different types had varying dispostions, but the wild variety were also brainless and only liked you as long as you maintained the oat field. Lots of hidden imagery and puns in his books. Personally I loved it. the sequel 'Source of all Magic' is pretty good too.

Kyou, The Cat from Fruits Basket, turned into the cat's "true form" when the juzu beads were removed, it was an extra screw-you part of the curse that only applied to The Cat, probably as punishment by the other zodiac members because he didn't want to be stuck in an endless cycle of reincarnation, read the true story of the zodiac in volume 22 to learn more.

About the second death in Serenity, if you saw the film in the cinema, when -that line- was spoken, the entire room was laughing. And then there was this very sharp and abrupt silence of shock.

Whether or not it was to give a sense of peril, it was a very well executed moment of audience manipulation. I respect that.

People over 30 have lived in the time where there were only 3 TV networks, and they used to show Gone with the Wind every year; it was a TV event experience. Same with films like The Ten Commandments, The Wizard of Oz, and It's a Wonderful Life. You basically had to try hard to miss those.

I doubt 50% of the people over 30 have seen Gone With the Wind. I put it at 10-20%.

But are you seriously saying Star Wars, Rocky, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc. are missable from a cultural standpoint? If that's what you're saying, then I just will have to disagree with you and leave it there.

As for Gone with the Wind, yeah, probably less than 20% of people under 30 have seen all of it. But easily more than 50% of people over 30, and that's still the majority of people in the USA.

I believe you mean $2.3 million for a foreign-language animated film is a decent haul.

Totoro is still missable from a cultural context as well. Lots of people know a bunch of big-name Hollywood icons like Darth Vader, Mickey Mouse and the whole Disney gang, Indiana Jones, Rocky Balboa, and others, but there's no real requirement that people see the films. They already know enough from the other cultural offshoots. Gone with the Wind has the highest adjusted gross in the United States, but how many people nowadays can say they've seen it all? or even parts of it?

You're thinking of Totoro being "missable" from a story context, I'm thinking of it from a cultural context. People now in their 20s and 30s in Japan, almost 100% of them have seen Totoro, and more than 50% of them have had it as their favorite movie at some point in their lives. It's just that culturally important.

And Totoro is missable in the same way that Mickey Mouse is missable. How many people have actually seen all of Steamboat Willie? Granted we're comparing a feature film to a short film, but both are a matter of presenting endearing characters rather than providing much of a conflict.

You guys are also all jerk stores for thinking Totoro is "missable". It's, like, the Star Wars of Japan, in that it's the favorite movie of an entire generation.

If I had been there I would've brought up Choose Your Own Adventure style books. I started with Steve Jackson's Fighting Fantasy (specifically "The Warlock of Firetop Mountain") before I even saw the CYOA series, and settled on Joe Dever's "Lone Wolf" series. "Grail Quest" was a lot of tongue-in-cheek Arthurian fun as well.

Re: Dom hating Wuthering Heights -- I'll give you that 'Amen' you're looking for. Got that sprung on me in 11th grade English class and it almost turned me off reading altogether.

Odd as it may sound, my favorite book as a child (not to mention the one that sticks with me to this day) was non-fiction. I remember reading "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" by Eleanor Coerr in 4th grade ... there wasn't a whole lot to it (only 80 pages), but I remember finding the story really moving.

Hopefully I can make it to Hiroshima later this year and educate myself about it first-hand.

Dom (as in the inspiration of the Megatokyo character) is, by all descriptions, Evil (in a totally fun way). Also, Dom (as in the host, who is also the inspiration to MTdom), joked about Amy's sexiness (more than one time, if memory serves).

As to childhood reading, for me it was all about the Brothers Grimm and other older European fairy tales where good people had bad things happen to them. Then when they got the upper hand they did even nastier things to the people who had hurt them. Sometimes the good guys didn't win and sometimes the good guys weren't nice at all. There were a lot of crafty tailors who got what they wanted / became rich in devious ways - I suspect that tailors were a stereotype for Jews.

I never got on with the 'wholesome' Disneyesque (sp?) school of fairy tales after that, they seemed far too childish. Can't really blame Disney though as Hans Christian Andersen had started the whole 'fairy tales for kids' thing much earlier.

Oh yes, Encyclopaedias. Read a lot of those.

I wish the Otakon website would put up a list of places to eat around the con. If I still had my con guide from last year they had a map with food places all over the place.

Unless I've gone mad and it's never existed there should be a giant metal modern art sculpture outside the con. People could meet there and then move on to a food place after that. It's on the corner of Pratt and Sharp Street.

I don't believe there will be a traffic blockage for a simple meetup like this, but am I just underestimating things?

As an SF native, my moments and places are a bit different than yours. But after having lived elsewhere and coming back, one thing really strikes me about the city:

It's really beautiful. There's hardly a bad view of the city from pretty much any angle. The surrounding area is also really great, and there's just the way the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean and lights up the sky in the evening that just warms my heart. Land, sea, air, mountains, it all fills up the eye and overwhelms the senses.

The only two cities I've been to that come close to SF in this kind of natural beauty are Seattle and Vancouver.

There are a lot of other things to recommend about SF, like the weather, the food, the people, the culture, the history, but for my money, it's also the most beautiful city in America. (Mad Cakester, DC and Chicago can't hold a candle to SF on weather, because they're both unlivable in the summer.)

I think I get why there are no Vietnamese places, though. Indonesia seems to be a place people leave to find work elsewhere in the region (Malaysia, HK, Singapore, etc.), not the other way around. With the lack of immigrants from other cultures, local cuisine dominates. Not that it's a bad thing, mind, but it's not great for variety.

As far as deliveries, I quote from the book of Jesse Ventura: 'Jokejokejoke'. So hard to get the right inflection over the Interwebs.

But I find it somewhat surprising Indonesia doesn't have any authentic Vietnamese restaurants given its proximity to Vietnam. Hrmm, now I'm feeling like Vietnamese.

For someone not born and not living in the U.S., it's nice to get a bit of non-tourism-information about SF, makes me want to visit when I visit America, because "everyone" talks about New York, but tend to forget there are actually other cities worth visiting too.

One small problem, though -- I currently live in Jakarta, not California. Any of those places deliver?

As for the East Bay, there's some pretty good places along Telegraph Avenue in Oakland. Koryo is probably my favorite BBQ place in the East Bay, mostly because it's closest to where I live. Seoul Gom Tang is very good for soups, and Pyung Chang Tofu House is good for their spicy tofu soups. I liked Sahn Maru as well. They still don't compare to the places in Southern California, but I like them well enough. I've also heard good things about Jong Ga House on Grand Ave. near Lake Merritt in Oakland, but I've only been there once years ago.

Damn... Now I feel like eating Korean food. And I should mention my favorite Korean BBQ place is Shik Do Rak in Garden Grove. Just note that that seems to be a popular name for Korean restaurants. I'm only talking about the one in Garden Grove.

Reminds me of 1) How long I've gone without good Vietnamese food and B) How pathetic it is that a city of millions doesn't have one good Vietnamese place. I've yet to find a decent Korean place, either, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

And secondly, I forgot to tell my middle school/Transformers 2 tie in, so here it is. Because of the wonders of Facebook, I've been able to reconnect with some old classmates of mine from my past. And because of that, I've been able to find out what some of my middle school classmates are up to now which is how I found out a former classmate of mine, Brian Paik, is now a creature technical director for ILM. You can search for him on IMDB to see what other movies he's worked on, but among them are both Transformers movies. He even has a picture of himself with Michael Bay at the Transformers 2 Wrap Party.

So that was kind of cool. Someone I know worked on the movie, even if it wasn't particularly great, it's still a cool thing to say you were a part of. And then one day I see Brian wrote a post on another middle school classmate's wall saying, "Hey, just saw Josh's name in the credits, Congrats!" I won't mention her name (although I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to figure out). That made me a bit curious, so I looked further into it and since I was also friends with her on Facebook, I found out he was talking about her husband, Josh Nizzi. Josh Nizzi is apparently a graphic designer and does designs for games, comics, and movies. He's done cover art for a lot of the Transformers comics that tie into the movies. He was also the one who made the concept drawing for the Decepticon, Long Haul, in Transformers 2.

So if you disliked the film, feel free to blame my middle school.

In any case, I gave up hope until the Otakuthon arrived up here. Unfortunately, they're not "big" yet, so no high-profile presences except the Montreal artists like Gisèle Lagacé

On the bright side, Montreal will not explode from Dom's awesomeness, so...

I need to get out more.

In regards to my email, I hadn't played VC until recently cause I didn't have a PS3. Also college has a way of keeping people busy.
